Asian Games Medal Not As Important As Justice For "India's Daughters," Says Bajrang Punia

Wrestler Bajrang Punia said that the current protest is more significant than the forthcoming Asian Games amid demonstrations by the nation's best wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh.

The Indian Express reported that he said during a news conference that “We want to play, it's not like we don't want to go to the Asian Games.” But I think achieving justice for the girls of our nation is far more important than receiving an Asian gold.

In September of this year, Hangzhou, China, will host the Asian Games. The Indian Olympic Association's designated ad hoc committee has yet to provide dates for the Asian Games trials, however, as a result of the WFI's suspension.

While only one wrestling family continues to demonstrate at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh, who is accused of sexual harassment by prominent female wrestlers, claimed that 90% of the athletes and their guardians from Haryana trust the organisation.

“A few households and the accusing girls belonged to the same 'akhada'…Deepender Hooda is the patron of the “akhada,” he allegedly said.

Singh was accused of politicking the situation by Bajrang Punia. “He wants to imbue this conflict with a political hue. He deployed his IT Cell to launch a defamation campaign against us the day those FIRs were filed against him. But based solely on his tweets, justice cannot be done. We have faith in the Supreme Court to uphold the law,” he reportedly said, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Additionally, a FIR was filed against the BJP MP. According to reports, the Delhi Police is offering assistance to the wrestlers who are protesting.

Arvind Kejriwal, the head of the AAP, and Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi both visited the protest location to show their support. According to Singh's election affidavit, he has been implicated in a number of other significant criminal cases. Singh is a well-known “Bahubali” (muscle guy) from Gonda and surrounding regions of Uttar Pradesh, and the Congress national secretary accused the government of “protecting” him.
