The aircraft crashed close to the desert hamlet of McKinlay, which is located more than 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) northwest of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland.

According to officials, it was being used for mapping flames, as there are now over a dozen active fires in the state.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will look into the crash’s cause, which is still unclear.

Australia is experiencing its worst bushfire season since 2019–2020, when a series of uncontrollably destructive fires tore through large tracts of forest, claimed millions of lives, and engulfed towns in toxic smoke.
