“If someone is advocating for jihad—” UK police caution amid an increase in hate crimes

According to the report, antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes continued to sharply increase as the London Metropolitan Police prepared for additional demonstrations in the city during the Israel-Hamas conflict. As contrast to 28 incidents during the same time last year, the Metropolitan Police said that 408 antisemitic offenses against the Jewish community in Britain were reported this month. The number of hate crimes against Muslims has increased from 65 in October 2022 to 174 so far this month. In addition, police have made 75 arrests related to the dispute, and its counterterrorism officers are looking into 10 possible infractions of anti-terror legislation.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-257327″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-if-someone-is-advocating-for-jihad-uk-police-caution-amid-an-increase-in-hate-crim.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com if someone is advocating for jihad uk police caution amid an increase in hate crim” width=”1327″ height=”747″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-if-someone-is-advocating-for-jihad-uk-police-caution-amid-an-increase-in-hate-crim.jpg 549w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-if-someone-is-advocating-for-jihad-uk-police-caution-amid-an-increase-in-hate-crim-390×220.jpg 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-if-someone-is-advocating-for-jihad-uk-police-caution-amid-an-increase-in-hate-crim-150×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1327px) 100vw, 1327px” title=”"If someone is advocating for jihad—" UK police caution amid an increase in hate crimes 3″>

Met Police Commander Kyle Gordon said, “We have made it very evident over the past week that we will police to the letter of the law wherever possible.”

“Our most skilled and informed officers are policing these events, ensuring that we are making the most use of all applicable laws.” “Any footage or images of potential crimes should be reported to us – we have specialist teams whose role is to scour thousands of pieces of content identifying crime,” he added. “I would encourage anyone who sees any crimes happening at the moment to report it to the nearest police officer.”

According to the police, thousands of officers will be on duty to “proactively” deal with anybody who breaches the law and to “provide reassurance” to people who want to share their opinions during the rallies. It said that it would also be attempting to minimize any disturbance to other Londoners and companies located in the UK’s capital.

Regarding “jihad” shouts at earlier demonstrations, which the UK government has denounced as inappropriate, the Met Police said, “If someone is calling for jihad specifically against Israel the officers will intervene, gather the information.” Regarding the best course of action, we’ll be collaborating with counterterrorism colleagues.

Under Section 12 of the UK’s Public Order Act, the Met Police has set stringent limitations on the protestors’ itinerary, and Section 14 of the Public Order Act imposes an additional requirement.
